Product FAQ
Q:We are retrofitting an old turbine control system that uses legacy non-XL 3300 sensors. Our new monitors require the improved diagnostics of the 3300 XL Proximitor. Can we simply swap the old Proximitor with the new 3300 XL unit without changing probes or cables, and expect it to work fully with the new monitors?
Q:During a recent outage, we found oil inside the extension cable jacket near the probe connector on a standard system. The probe itself wasn't leaking from the O-ring. How is this possible, and how do we prevent it?
Q:Our maintenance procedure requires us to verify the Proximitor sensor output during operation without disconnecting field wiring. How can we safely do this with the 3300 XL?
A: Yes, you can directly replace the old Proximitor with a 3300 XL unit; they are physically and electrically interchangeable using the same 4-hole mounting pattern. The system will output a valid signal.
A: This is a phenomenon called "fluid migration" or "wicking." Turbine oil or other process liquids can travel inside the interstitial spaces between the cable's conductors and insulation over long periods, even without a pressure leak at the probe seal. This can eventually reach and damage the Proximitor sensor. Prevention: For applications with significant oil exposure (e.g., inside bearing housings), you must specify the FluidLoc cable option (e.g., option code -11 or -12) for both the probe and the extension cable. FluidLoc cable has a special gel-filling that blocks these internal pathways, preventing fluid migration through the cable.
A: Use the 3300 XL Test Plug (PN: 148722-01). It has three pins that plug directly into the test pin holes on the 3300 XL Proximitor sensor's terminal strip. The attached color-coded wires with banana plugs allow you to connect a multimeter or portable calibrator to measure the sensor's raw output voltage (Tip: measure between the "-OUT" and "COM" banana plugs for the -1 to -17 Vdc gap signal). This allows performance verification while the sensor remains powered and connected to the monitor, ensuring operational safety and avoiding unnecessary disconnections.
