Cabling represents a large portion of the cost of installing a process control system. In order to reduce this cost, a range of distributable I/O units (S400 I/O and S800 I/O) are available covering the most common process signal types. The distributable I/O units communicate with the controller through MasterFieldbus (S400 I/O) and Advant Fieldbus 100 (S800 I/O). Large S100 I/O cluster can be distributed too by using an optical S100 bus extension. This facilitates for example the location of I/O cabinets close to a remote switch gear.

Process variables, connected via S400 I/O units and S100 I/O boards, are available in the process data base in the same way. The high performance of MasterFieldbus makes the delay in process scanning due to fieldbus communication negligible in most applications. However, time-tagged events have comparatively reduced accuracy. If an S400 I/O unit loses its contact with Advant Controller 450 for any reason, it enters “local mode.” In this mode, it maintains its output signals at their most recent correct values or to a predetermined value, as selected by the user. These safe values are set in the Advant Controller 450 data base and transferred to the unit at start-up. Normal operation is resumed when the connection is re-established.
