The PLC 1757-FIM ProcessLogix Fieldbus Interface Module (FIM) is a solid-state electronic device used for interconnecting an H1 Foundation Fieldbus network into an PLC PLC Logix system. The FIM serves as the communication gateway between the Supervisory ControlNet/Ethernet network the or I/O ControlNet network and the Foundation Fieldbus H1 communication option. Fieldbus devices in the H1 Foundation network can be monitored and controlled from the 1757-FIM ProcessLogix Fieldbus Interface Module at a communication speed of 31.25 kbit/s. Another benefit of using the FIM is that it permits the integration of the Foundation Fieldbus Devices' process, maintenance, and alarm data with the notification and display functions in the control of the final user’s systems.

The recommended cable for connecting Foundation Fieldbus devices to the PLC 1757-FIM ProcessLogix Fieldbus Interface Module is #18 AWG (0.8 millimeters square) shielded, twisted-pair wire. Another recommended type of cable is the one used in old school industrial instrumentation transmitters, for 4 to 20 milliamps rated signals. The configuration of the Foundation Fieldbus H1 networks is made by integrating each of the Fieldbus devices' functions (the analog input, analog output, discrete input, or the discrete output) into the application’s control algorithm, where the process controllers are generally integrated through a ControlNet network.
