How to Match a Bently Nevada 3300 XL Probe, Extension Cable and Proximitor Sensor
A proximity channel is not three independent spare parts. The probe, extension cable and Proximitor Sensor form one calibrated electrical chain—and the monitor must be configured for that chain's signal.
Explore the Four Links in the Measurement Chain
Open each stage to see its role and the fields that must be confirmed. The complete order number—not the family name alone—defines the usable configuration.
STAGE 01
330101 Probe
Detects shaft position or vibration at the machine.
- 8 mm standard-mount family
- 3/8-24 UNF thread
- Case and unthreaded lengths
- Integral cable and connector option
- Armor and approval option
STAGE 02
330130 Cable
Completes the calibrated electrical length.
- 3.0 to 8.5 m length options
- Standard, armored or FluidLoc
- Connector protector option
- Probe lead + cable length rule
- Approval suffix verification
STAGE 03
330180 Sensor
Drives the probe and conditions the output.
- 1 m, 5 m or 9 m system option
- Panel, DIN or no hardware
- Standard AISI 4140 calibration
- Nominal 200 mV/mil for 8 mm
- Approval option confirmation
STAGE 04
3500 Monitor
Measures and protects using the conditioned signal.
- 40M: proximity inputs
- 42M: proximity and seismic inputs
- 100 or 200 mV/mil configuration
- Rear I/O and termination type
- Channel-pair function setup
Can 5 mm, 8 mm and 11 mm Systems Be Mixed?
Compatibility is defined by the documented system architecture—not by connector appearance or brand name alone.
3300 5 mm
A 3300 5 mm probe is documented for use with a 3300 XL extension cable and 3300 XL Proximitor Sensor.
3300 XL 8 mm
The 330101, 330130 and 330180 families form the standard 8 mm chain discussed in this guide.
3300 XL 11 mm
Uses its own 11 mm probe family, 330730 extension cable and 330780 Proximitor Sensor.
An 11 mm probe, cable or Proximitor Sensor should not be substituted into a 330101/330130/330180 chain. For 5 mm and 8 mm combinations, confirm the exact documented family, electrical length, target calibration and channel scale factor.
Build the Correct 5-Meter or 9-Meter Electrical Length
Open a system length to review valid probe-plus-extension-cable examples. These are electrical combinations, not merely cable-routing distances.
5 m 330180 5-meter systemProbe lead + 330130 cable must total 5.0 m
A 5 m integral-cable probe is intended for a 5 m Proximitor Sensor.
9 m 330180 9-meter systemProbe lead + 330130 cable must total 9.0 m
The 3.0 m probe option is specifically identified for 330101 and is intended for the 9 m Proximitor system. One-meter systems use no extension cable.
Threaded Probe or Smooth-Case Probe?
The difference is mainly mechanical mounting. Both require the correct probe family, gap, cable routing and measurement-chain match.
Threaded case · 330101
330101 is a standard-mount 8 mm probe with a 3/8-24 UNF threaded case and no armor. It is installed through a threaded bracket or machine mounting point and secured after the operating gap is set.
- Confirm thread standard and diameter
- Check case and unthreaded lengths
- Verify locknut and thread engagement
Smooth case · 330140/330141
A smooth-case probe has no mounting thread. It is positioned in a compatible clamp bracket, then secured after the probe gap is established.
- Confirm clamp and bracket compatibility
- Preserve probe-tip clearance
- Do not confuse smooth case with unthreaded length
Three Variables That Must Match Electrically
A stable-looking voltage is not proof of a correct measurement. The scale factor, calibration target and tuned electrical length all affect the reported value.
Sensitivity
The standard 8 mm chain is nominally 200 mV/mil, while the 11 mm system is 100 mV/mil. The 3500 channel must use the correct transducer sensitivity.
Target Material
Standard performance is specified using an AISI 4140 steel target. A different shaft alloy, geometry or target size can change the scale factor and requires engineering review.
Electrical Length
A 5 m sensor must see a 5 m probe-plus-cable combination; a 9 m sensor must see 9 m. Physical routing length alone does not define compatibility.
Does Replacing Only the Probe Require Recalibration?
Correct same-family 3300 XL 8 mm components are designed for interchangeability, but the protection channel still requires controlled verification before return to service.
Normally no individual bench calibration
This applies when the replacement is a correct same-family component, the system remains at its original electrical length, and the target is the standard AISI 4140 calibration.
- Exact order number confirmed
- Same probe family and connector arrangement
- Correct 5 m or 9 m Proximitor option
- Original target calibration retained
Field verification is still required
Interchangeability does not remove the need to check the complete channel and its machinery-protection configuration.
- Gap voltage and available linear range
- Monitor sensitivity and measurement type
- Shielding, grounding and connector condition
- OK status, alarms, bypass and voting logic
- Indicated value against the maintenance procedure
This includes a different target material, mixed XL/non-XL components, changed system length, an 11 mm chain replacing an 8 mm chain, or an unconfirmed original channel configuration.
3500/40M or 3500/42M: Which Monitor Fits the Signal?
Both are four-channel 3500 modules, but the accepted transducer signals and supported monitoring functions are not identical.
For proximity-transducer inputs
Accepts one to four proximity signals and supports proximity-based machinery measurements.
Radial vibration, thrust and eccentricity configurations support 100 or 200 mV/mil. Confirm the rear I/O and channel-pair configuration.
View Moore 3500/40M →For proximity, velocity or acceleration inputs
Supports proximity functions plus seismic measurements when the selected I/O module and channel setup support them.
Do not treat the 42M as an automatic drop-in replacement. Verify main module, rear I/O, termination style, transducer type and rack database.
